The following is an abridged version of the April 23, 2013 post from the author's blog relating to the writing of Measure of Devotion:

The Story Behind the Story: Measure of Devotion

It all started with Kale.

Inspiration comes in many forms. Sometimes a story develops slowly over time, inspiration trickling in. Other times, it comes in a flash. With Measure of Devotion, it came as an image.

I was standing outside my bedroom closet when, as clear as day, I saw Kale in the last scene of Measure of Devotion. I instantly forgot what I was doing. There was something about him that drew me in. The anguish on his face was so compelling. I had to know how he got there. What had happened to him?

Over the next few days, Kale told me his story. I was instantly in love with him, and getting to know him and Jason was like connecting with old friends. I even found myself feeling for Renee and the difficult situation in which society had placed her. All the characters came together to form the story of Measure of Devotion.

The first person who ever read Measure of Devotion was my best friend. I actually read the end to her while she was driving and I was positively giddy to see that she cried. I was elated that she felt so close to the characters that she was brought to tears by their pain. The very first thing she wanted to know was what happened next.

"That's the end," I told her.

"You can't do that," she said.

From the beginning, I had intended Measure of Devotion to be the story of this particular slice of Kale's life. Nothing more. I was happy with the ending. Kale got what he wanted, and that was that.

"Well then, write a sequel just for me." As if novels are the product of a long weekend.

This argument went back and forth and ended with me conceding that I would remain open to inspiration for a sequel, but I wasn't going to force anything.

Life continued.

Work progressed on getting Measure of Devotion published, but there was that nagging voice of my best friend demanding a sequel. I spoke to Karen, my editor, about it and she liked the story as a standalone. She understood that I liked it as it was: a beautiful, bittersweet story of a man who experienced true love instead of the selfish love that is so rampant. However, she did think that a sequel would certainly be welcome if one came to me.

Meanwhile, I moved on to other stories while Measure of Devotion was being prepared for publication.

And that's when it happened.

As soon as I turned my attention to another story, inspiration struck again. Only this time, it was Jason who called to me. I saw him sitting in the bar at the beginning of Measure of Strength. I needed to know where he was going from there.

It didn't take long for Measure of Strength to take form after that. Additionally, I knew what would happen in a third book, although I didn't think at the time anyone would ever be interested.

Why do I tell you this now?

Mainly because several people have stated that I only wrote Measure of Devotion as a cliffhanger and setup for Measure of Strength. The truth is, the sequel wasn't even a thought until right before Measure of Devotion was released. I'm sure after reading this, those of you who thought I was mean before will think me doubly so now that you know I was willing to let Measure of Devotion stand.

Also, my best friend wanted credit for the sequel.

So there you have it, the story of how Measure of Devotion came to be.

However likable he thinks he was, it is a little difficult to get 100% behind a loner that was into having his head chopped off and cryogenically frozen. Also had trouble with the manufacturing capabilities of these probes - not only could they make space stations, vast transport ships, etc... but, also continually improve on existing engine tech, create heretofore unknown communications devices from stuff laying around the local asteroid belt?! Granted, this is just a fun Sci-fi read and I've taken crazier stuff at face value in any number of other books. In Bob's case, it was just not a real smooth transition from 'Brain in a box' to omnipotent overlord of the known universe. However, the von Neumann probe story line is very interesting and the multiple probe story lines proved to be both diverse and compelling. As a result of over-Bob and some political soap boxing, I was surprised at the abrupt ending but not too concerned.

"We Are Legion: We Are Bob" is one of those rare sci-fi novels that just fires on all cylinders, providing stimulating concepts, well-told and well-plotted storylines, and a fantastic narrator who brings the whole thing to life. In short, the book is a blast. The tone is witty, thoughtful, and introspective, but this is interspersed with edge-of-your-seat action, and when it's all over, "Bob" definitely leaves you wanting more.The premise concerns one Bob Johansson, a self-proclaimed nerd, but a very successful one at that. He's made a lot of money from software designs. Basically, he's your typical engineering genius and all-around problem-solver, and this serves him well as the novel's events unfold. At the start of things, all is mostly well for Bob, who, despite some losses in his love life, nonetheless is reaping the rewards from the recent sale of his software company and is just looking forward to a life of leisure and peaceful recreation. Suddenly fate steps in and sends him off into a Futurama-like state of cryogenic limbo. When he wakes up, a hundred-and-seventeen years have passed, leaving Bob stranded in the future without any connections to the life he once knew: family, friends, and even the English language have all moved on.From here the news gets even stranger. As it turns out, Bob is, uh, not exactly himself anymore. Or is he? It's hard to say, really and is one of the things you as a reader have to work out for yourself. On the one hand, technically, Bob really is not Bob anymore: the entirety of his brain has been scanned and uploaded into a special, high tech cube, so there is nothing organic about Bob that remains any longer. He exists now as a computer program that merely thinks it is Bob. And yet, on the other hand, from this Bob's point of view, only a few moments have transpired from his last conscious memories to the present moment. So, despite all evidence to the contrary, Bob still feels like Bob.This idea of uploading one's consciousness is an intriguing concept, and the author does not dodge all of the existential questions that go with it. Does Bob have a soul? Is he truly a conscience being? Or is he just a very clever computer, a "Chinese Room." Bob's situation, if restricted entirely to these sorts of questions, would still make for a stimulating read; however, this is only the opening salvo. As the novel progresses, many more challenges to Bob's status are presented to the reader, and all of it is done in such a plausible, sane, and, thankfully, non-overly-dramatic way, that the result transcends into an invigorating, imaginative fantasy that just keeps expanding in its scope. It's all very satisfying.It might be worth mentioned that the author manages to accomplish all of this without the use of gratuitous profanity, graphic sex, or bloody violence, yet it's not as if these elements come across as noticeably absent; they just aren't needed and so aren't missed. Does this make the novel family-friendly? Surprisingly, the answer is not necessarily. Religion is a major theme of "We Are Legion: We Are Bob," and those who practice it are not always portrayed positively to say the least, so this aspect might prove too mature for younger listeners."Bob" isn't just a lot of deep, philosophical musings, though; mainly its an epic adventure story reminiscent of classic sci-fi adventures, such as "When Worlds Collide." Other literary influences abound: there's a bit of Orwell here, a dash of Arthur C. Clark there, and I detected Andy Weir's "The Martian" in Bob's attitude and general approach to problem-solving. Phillip K. Dick's "Mr. Spaceship" deserves a special nod, as well.I could go on, (references to "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" are everywhere, for example). Suffice it to say that homages are plentiful in "Bob" and are one of the things that make it so much fun. This is not to say, ultimately, that the book is unoriginal; exactly the opposite is true. I don't think I've ever read a novel quite like this one, especially in its approach to storytelling . I did a bit of research and discovered the writer's website, where he describes himself as an "irate reader" who has now become a "nervous author." I suspect that by "irate" he may mean that in many ways stories can irritate us as much as they entertain.I'm always irritated, for instance, at stories that present their heroes with some extraordinary set of circumstances (such as time travel), yet somehow the hero just adapts immediately, as if this sort of thing just happens all the time. I would be completely freaked out if I actually traveled through time. Likewise, at minimum, I expect a few paragraphs of reaction. Just once I'd like to see a protagonist completely freaked out, at least for a little bit. It's just these sort of irritations that the author avoids altogether. His characters take time out to experience the moment instead of moving forward right away to the next plot point. Nothing feels rushed and everything seems to unfold exactly as it should. In many ways the book feels like a sci-fi novel written especially with the fans in mind.Thus, although it may seem like a bold statement to make, it seems to me that "Bob" marks the arrival of a brilliant, new voice in sci-fi. Dennis E. Taylor has written and published one other novel prior to this one ("Outland," published in 2015), but, apparently this was before he got an agent. Although the first novel received highly favorable reader reviews, overall sales were slow, and no audiobook was produced. This new novel, on the other hand, is receiving the full Audible Studios treatment, and its Amazon sales rank so far is in the top thirty books sold. With narrator Ray Porter's amazingly nuanced performance, here, I wouldn't be surprised if demand for this title increases dramatically.Author Dennis E. Taylor, may end up having to redo his "about-me" profile, as a result, where he self-identifies first as a computer programmer but only last as an author (right behind "snowboarder"). Very fun book, and although I don't think I have ever said this about any other book, more fun in the audiobook version than in print. I started listening to the audiobook while cooking, sat down after dinner to finish it in print and switched back to the audio version because I liked it better. The narrator does a great job of giving each Bob a different voice, as well as GUPI's voice.Read the author's blog and it is good to see that 3 books are planned. Yes, this one ends somewhat abruptly with many unfinished storylines, but that is pretty much required by the way the story is being told. Some plot lines came to a natural break point, others clearly will be developed more down the line.

If this is his first book, wow! I loved it and immediately followed him on Amazon. Five stars was mandatory, I could give nothing else. Book starts out reminding me a whole lot of, A World Out Of Time, one of my favorites by Larry Niven. It may start out there but it does not stay there long. the similarities are few and only at the beginning. Once Bob leaves earth in his first iteration it quickly becomes clear that Dennis Taylor has created a vast and awesome universe in his own right. Each Bob or group of Bobs has their own time line intersecting here and there with the others.This is an amazing adventure in space with hints of where the story may go that keep you constantly wanting to read more. Some other reviews mention the fact that the story ends rather abruptly and at first I was upset by this. But I went to the authors page and found he is working on books 2 and 3 even as I type this. So to me him ending the book without really resolving any of the major conflicts is not a problem. I think it only adds to the level of suspense and excitement at the prospect of getting to read the next books.Highly recommend.

Loved this! Loved every minute listening to it. Fantastic reader who does a perfect job capturing Bob's (and all his iterations) sense of humor without going overboard. The book is highly entertaining with lots of humor and nods to popular culture (mostly sci-fi) but it does have sections that get a bit "techy". I was OK with that and didn't worry if I didn't understand it all. Once Bob hits a certain point in space, the story boos around between different times and different iterations of Bob (without giving too much away). They were all so exciting and interesting. (Well some more than others.) I'm assuming this book would be just as good in print as it is in audio but I do highly recommend the audio. Listen to the sample and if you enjoy it, consider giving it a listen. If you aren't an Audible member, no worries. This book has a whispersync special price and I think you can get both the kindle version and the audio for like $6 (give or take, at least when I bought them recently). I cannot wait for the next book in the series to see what happens to everyone. Explore new worlds with Bob, et al., and give this book a try.

Interwoven with this theme is that of the impoverished young aristocrat, Rastignac, come to Paris from the provinces to make his fortune, who befriends Goriot and becomes involved with the daughters. The story is set against the background of a whole society driven by social ambition and lust for money.

About the Author
Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) was born in Tours. By the time of his death, he had written over one hundred novels, novellas, and plays, all the while working as a journalist. Colonel Chabert is one of the "Scenes from Private Life," which is a part of Balzac's well-known life-long project, La Comedie Humaine.

Peter Brooks has written extensively about the nineteenth-century novel, French and English. His books include The Melodramatic Imagination: Balzac, Henry James, Melodrama, and the Mode of Excess; Reading for the Plot, Body Work, Psychoanalysis and Storytelling and The Emperor's Body: A Novel. After many years on the faculty at Yale University, he currently teaches at Princeton University.

Burton Raffel is Distinguished Professor of Humanities at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Emeritus. He is the translator of many works, including Gargantua and Pantagruel (awarded the French-American Foundation Translation Prize), Père Goriot, Beowulf, and the five romances of Chrétien de Troyes.
