A great window into every day life under communism. A fantastic historical narrative that focuses on things not normally covered in history class, like communist toilet paper, sharing apartments, talking with the man who listens to all your phone calls, etc.

Written by an intelligent and very funny woman, she gives surprising views of life under Communism. She addresses various topics, and things I have wondered about. Many times you will catch yourself laughing out loud.

This book is a reality check and an eye-opener to a lot of people, I've asked several of my friends to read it. My mom and I both cried when we read it. My mom's family is from eastern Europe and I had only heard little bits and pieces of stories from my grandma. This book helped me see things a lot better. If you have any interest in eastern European culture, history or the modern history of feminism and human rights, and you like reading about more personal accounts, then this would be a good book to read. Because of the cold war and American/Western attitudes towards this area of the world (whether those are right or not is another story for another book), there is a lot that happened that we don't know about during this time period. It's interesting to see things from a different POV and Slavenka does a great job showing us what it was like to be there.

A great combination of first hand experiences and interviews by a woman, mother and journalist. Copyright date of 1991 I found is a real plus since experiences were very recent.

Kind of interesting book touching a lot of subjects that persons who lived under communism will certainly understand. It is a great reading.

Nice copy. Wish there had not been stickers right in the middle of the cover. Pls put in a less conspicuous place.

The book therefore focuses on two aspects of Palmyrene civilization during the first three centuries of the Common Era: the emergence and subsequent development of Palmyra as a commercial and political center in the desert frontier between Rome and Parthia (and later Persia), and the "making" of Palmyrenes. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone. The history of Palmyra's communal development would be wholly obscure were it not for the archaeological and epigraphic materials that testify to Palmyrene achievements and prosperity at home and abroad. These, complemented by the literary evidence, also provide insight into the relatively obscure historical process of sedentarization and of the relationships between pastoral and sedentary communities in the Roman Near East. In addition to examining Palmyra as a frontier community, the book will move beyond Syria to explore the development and maintenance of Palmyrene identity in diaspora settings in Italy, north Africa, and Europe. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone.

Got hooked on this book after reading chapters for my anthro class (Technology Media and Perception). Sterne's writing style is quite informative but without being quite as dry as a lot of cultural theory you might read (have read). If you are into music recording, editing, production, playing, media studies, cultural studies, anthropology, or are just looking for some interesting nonficiton then this is a good book to check out. Really, really cool stuff.

This book is all about fundamentals, true to text book format. It's unique in this as I was trying to find a book that wasn't just page after page of designs. He stresses learning the proper way through an apprenticeship. There is no substitute for learning directly from a master but this can show you the basic fundamentals so that you're armed with knowledge. It covers everything from how to build a machine and the breakdown of the parts to bloodborn pathogens and the importance of proper hygiene. I'm really glad I picked this up. I feel better informed.

Takes the craft seriously. Not for the pick up a machine kit and play kind of instructional route.

Literally everything this guy says in the book is that it's a matter of preference... Needle length, voltage, outlining, shading, every single thing. He does say what is recommended or what is most popular, he doesn't say anything helpful in this book. I bought it to expand my knowledge of tattooing, as I have been doing it for about two years and wanted to learn more about technique and recommended tips and tricks; this book will not help you. If you're a brand new artist maybe it might shed some light of a few things, but for the most part he tells you just need around with it and figure out what you like... There I just saved you $35.The book came on time and was in great condition, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars, but the information in the book is pretty useless.

As it's not for me I cannot write a 100% accurate review. But anyway, a very small book for the price BUT I assume that is because it has no illustrations/pictures in it. It's all text which is good. My little sister wants to be a tattoo artist and I hope this has enough information for her to learn more about her chosen career path. It was thrown in with my other orders so packaging wasn't great but the book didn't sustain any damage from that.

I started out with this book and it gave me all the base knowledge needed to help me in my apprenticeship. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a professional apprenticeship or simply curious about the fundamentals of tattooing. Note: Follow the books advice, never take to skin without professional guidance from a creditable shop. No book will ever substitute for an apprenticeship.

It's only the second tattoo beginner's book I've read this month, but I personally found it superior to the first (The Complete Art of Tattooing - Erick Alayon). This book breaks down the art of tattooing into easy to follow fundamental sections. In the early part of the book it even defines a set of landmarks the beginning artist should accomplish prior to putting needle to skin. It's everything the beginning artist needs in their first book. It touches on all aspects of the industry and process of tattooing. I highly recommend it to the beginning artist.My favorite thing about this book is that the author gives the reader a of list of retailers for equipment and supplies after each respective section. Like other beginner's books he stresses the importance of an apprenticeship, and informs beginning artists that quality equipment and supplies from many renowned retailers will only sell to licensed tattoo shops.

Excellent book and extremely well written. This book give a great insight into tattooing from explination of your machine to sanitation and more. Everything is written and explained in such a manner that anyone can understand and will grasp. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in tattooing or tattoos in general. You won't be disappointed.
