This city-state is unique in the ancient world, since it began as a humble community, probably no more than an isolated village, and grew--due in part to its role in the caravan trade--into an economically powerful, cosmopolitan urban center of Graeco-Roman character that operated outside of Roman rule, yet under Roman patronage. The book therefore focuses on two aspects of Palmyrene civilization during the first three centuries of the Common Era: the emergence and subsequent development of Palmyra as a commercial and political center in the desert frontier between Rome and Parthia (and later Persia), and the "making" of Palmyrenes. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone. The history of Palmyra's communal development would be wholly obscure were it not for the archaeological and epigraphic materials that testify to Palmyrene achievements and prosperity at home and abroad. These, complemented by the literary evidence, also provide insight into the relatively obscure historical process of sedentarization and of the relationships between pastoral and sedentary communities in the Roman Near East. In addition to examining Palmyra as a frontier community, the book will move beyond Syria to explore the development and maintenance of Palmyrene identity in diaspora settings in Italy, north Africa, and Europe. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone.

Amazing Book!

Got hooked on this book after reading chapters for my anthro class (Technology Media and Perception). Sterne's writing style is quite informative but without being quite as dry as a lot of cultural theory you might read (have read). If you are into music recording, editing, production, playing, media studies, cultural studies, anthropology, or are just looking for some interesting nonficiton then this is a good book to check out. Really, really cool stuff.

Great book and really informative. I'm saving money for an internship but until then I'm trying to learn everything I can just to get a jump start. This book is all about fundamentals, true to text book format. It's unique in this as I was trying to find a book that wasn't just page after page of designs. He stresses learning the proper way through an apprenticeship. There is no substitute for learning directly from a master but this can show you the basic fundamentals so that you're armed with knowledge. It covers everything from how to build a machine and the breakdown of the parts to bloodborn pathogens and the importance of proper hygiene. I'm really glad I picked this up. I feel better informed.

Takes the craft seriously. Not for the pick up a machine kit and play kind of instructional route.

Literally everything this guy says in the book is that it's a matter of preference... Needle length, voltage, outlining, shading, every single thing. He does say what is recommended or what is most popular, he doesn't say anything helpful in this book. I bought it to expand my knowledge of tattooing, as I have been doing it for about two years and wanted to learn more about technique and recommended tips and tricks; this book will not help you. If you're a brand new artist maybe it might shed some light of a few things, but for the most part he tells you just need around with it and figure out what you like... There I just saved you $35.The book came on time and was in great condition, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars, but the information in the book is pretty useless.

As it's not for me I cannot write a 100% accurate review. But anyway, a very small book for the price BUT I assume that is because it has no illustrations/pictures in it. It's all text which is good. My little sister wants to be a tattoo artist and I hope this has enough information for her to learn more about her chosen career path. It was thrown in with my other orders so packaging wasn't great but the book didn't sustain any damage from that.

I started out with this book and it gave me all the base knowledge needed to help me in my apprenticeship. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a professional apprenticeship or simply curious about the fundamentals of tattooing. Note: Follow the books advice, never take to skin without professional guidance from a creditable shop. No book will ever substitute for an apprenticeship.

Thank you so much for providing reliable and professional information about a generally guarded industry. This book will be opening doors for tattoo artists for years to come. I can't recommend it highly enough. BUY BUY BUY!

It's only the second tattoo beginner's book I've read this month, but I personally found it superior to the first (The Complete Art of Tattooing - Erick Alayon). This book breaks down the art of tattooing into easy to follow fundamental sections. In the early part of the book it even defines a set of landmarks the beginning artist should accomplish prior to putting needle to skin. It's everything the beginning artist needs in their first book. It touches on all aspects of the industry and process of tattooing. I highly recommend it to the beginning artist.My favorite thing about this book is that the author gives the reader a of list of retailers for equipment and supplies after each respective section. Like other beginner's books he stresses the importance of an apprenticeship, and informs beginning artists that quality equipment and supplies from many renowned retailers will only sell to licensed tattoo shops.

Excellent book and extremely well written. This book give a great insight into tattooing from explination of your machine to sanitation and more. Everything is written and explained in such a manner that anyone can understand and will grasp. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in tattooing or tattoos in general. You won't be disappointed.

Phanish Puranam is the Roland Berger Chair Professor of Strategy and Organization Design, and Academic Director of the Ph.D. programme at INSEAD. He was previously Chair of the PhD programme at London Business School. A leading researcher, teacher and advisor in the areas of corporate strategy and organization design, Phanish has won several honours for his work. He received his PhD at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Bart Vanneste is Associate Professor of Strategy at the School of Management, University College London. He researches and teaches corporate strategy, with a focus on the design and management of inter-organizational relationships. He received his PhD at the London Business School.
