About the Author
ELENA FORRER, a native of Spain, joined the San Francisco Waldorf School in 1989. As a child she loved performing, singing, painting, and working with children. After graduating from the School of Applied Arts in Madrid, she moved to California, where she encountered Waldorf education. Inspired by the richness of the curriculum and the work of Rudolf Steiner, she began to teach at the San Francisco Waldorf School, where she pioneered the Spanish program. After completing her training equivalency through the Rudolf Steiner College, she published, along with other Waldorf Spanish teachers, a book entitled Senderos: Teaching Spanish in Waldorf Schools. Over the years, she has combined Spanish teaching with teaching painting and drawing in the middle school and high school. Elena has been a mentor to new teachers, assessing Spanish programs in Waldorf schools across the country. She has also been part of the summer faculty at the Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento and a painting instructor for LifeWays. Elena lives with her family in Marin County, California, and continues to teach at the San Francisco Waldorf School.

Rafter traces the evolution of women’s prisons, showing that it followed two markedly different models. Custodial institutions for women literally grew out of men’s penitentiaries, starting from a separate room for women. Eventually women were housed in their own separate facilities–a development that ironically inaugurated a continuing history of inmate neglect. Then, later in the nineteenth century, women convicted of milder offenses, such as morals charges, were placed into a new kind of institution. The reformatory was a result of middle-class reform movements, and it attempted to rehabilitate to a degree unknown in men’s prisons. Tracing regional and racial variations in these two branches of institutions over time, Rafter finds that the criminal justice system has historically meted out partial justice to female inmates. Women have benefited in neither case.

Partial Justice draws in first-hand accounts, legislative documents, reports by investigatory commissions, and most importantly, the records of over 4,600 female prisoners taken from the original registers of five institutions. This second edition includes two new chapters that bring the story into the present day and discusses measures now being used to challenge the partial justice women have historically experienced.

About the Author

Alexander Burakov has been scrupulously investigating the 2004 Beslan tragedy for over five years. He personally authored the Russian Wikipedia article on the Beslan Massacre that received Article of the Year award in 2011.
