About the Author
Lee Maracle is the author of a number of critically acclaimed literary works including Sojourners and Sundogs, Ravensong, Bobbi Lee: Indian Rebel, Daughters Are Forever, Wills Garden, Bent Box, I Am Woman, and Celias Song. Born in North Vancouver, Maracle is a member of the Sto: Loh nation. She is the mother of four and grandmother of seven. She currently serves as the Traditional Teacher for First Nations House and an instructor with the Centre for Indigenous Theatre and Support for Aboriginal Graduate Education (SAGE) at the University of Toronto, as well as writing instructor at the Banff Centre for the Arts. For her work promoting writing among Aboriginal youth, Maracle received the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and, in 2014, was awarded the Ontario Premiers Award for Excellence in the Arts.

Typical of DK publishing, this book is big, full of color pictures and fun to thumb through. However, have a magnifying glass ready at hand for many of the picture and photo captions are rendered in small font as well as in some difficult color fonts. These provide a challenge for the unaided eye that detracts for the reading experience.This book is not a comprehensive or exhaustive history of signs and symbols or of their interpretative meanings. However, with said magnifying glass in had and a cup of tea at the ready, this book can provide an enjoyable distraction, especially when one considers the alternative demands for one’s time.

Although I bought this book as a gift I did page through it a bit and it looked really high quality, especially the pages with gold accents. I might buy it for myself in the future.

This book is very nice. Full of great illustrations. The only thing I dislike about it is due to its size and plethora of signs and symbols it covers it does not go into great detail about the things covered within. It does however give you a lot of useful information and has helped me understand the symbolism behind many things.

I absolutely love Symbols & Symbolism, especially Spiritual, Esoteric, Magical & Metaphysical Symbols & Symbolism. So now I have this book as well as Adele Nozedar's Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols, both of which are gorgeously illustrated with an easy to read layout and tons of information! You can get lost in these books for hours! It's simply fascinating!

As inspiring as it is, I was mildly disappointed how little depth the texts go into and how it seems somewhat jumbled in the organization department. It's good as visual reference, not for deep research into symbolism.

About the Author

Anthony J. Wheeler received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1971. Dr. Wheeler is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Engineering at San Francisco State University where he taught courses in Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, and lectures and laboratories in Experimental Methods. His development activities in laboratories in experimentation were the precursors to the present textbook.

 

Professor Ahmad R. Ganji received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979. He is a professional engineer in the State of California. He has served as a faculty member at San Francisco State University since 1987, teaching courses in the areas of thermal-fluids, experimentation, and air pollution, and publishing over 40 works. Dr. Ganji has been the director of Industrial Assessment Center–a US DOE sponsored project since 1992. In this capacity he has managed hundreds of energy assessments of manufacturing facilities. As a consultant in energy efficiency projects, he has directed and managed numerous measurement and verification (M&V) projects that involve the formulation of detailed measurement protocols based on national and international standards.

I am new to welding. It's something I've wanted to do for quite some time but I just finally got around to tackling it. The first book I bought was The Welders Handbook. I read it cover to cover. It was OK, but left me wanting. After reading the reviews here I ordered How To Weld. I wish I had read this book first! Todd Bridigum does an excellent job of organizing the information. The book builds knowledge in layers. Todd discusses not only the obligatory safety items (which he still manages to keep interesting), but also different types of metal that you may find at the yard, how they are sold (sheet, linear foot, pound, etc), tools useful in metal fabrication, joint designs and positions, and brazing and soldering to top it off. This isn't just a book on welding, it's really an introduction to metal!When I first decided to learn to weld I just wanted to be able to put two pieces of metal together and have them not come apart. After reading Todd's book I have so much more appreciation for certified welders and the jobs they do. This book will teach you the finer points of developing a good weld without trying to make you a certified welder. It strikes an excellent balance between a cursory overview of welding and a full technical manual. This is exactly what every home/hobbyist welder wants.After giving a full lecture on all the different types of welding and the geometry of the weld (with tons of great color photos and drawings) , Todd sets up detailed welding exercises specific to each type of welding technology - accompanied by yet more pictures. This is some excellent instruction! There are also plenty of sidebars with excellent, more technical, information that will keep this book useful as a reference for years to come as well.If you are new to welding you will not be disappointed with this book.My one critique item would be that on page 42 he talks about "CJP" without defining it. I had to turn to Google to figure out that it means "Complete Joint Penetration". He eventually defines it eight pages later on page 54, but it would certainly provide more continuity to have it defined when it is first used.

This is probably the only book available that would allow somebody to learn, practice and become proficient in all major methods of welding on their own (or with the assistance of a more experienced welder). I'm "proficient" in both MIG & TIG, but Oxy/Acetylene has always mystified me & I can "do" stick (but don't enjoy it). Just quickly reading through the book has given me a new understanding & impetus to pull out my Oxy equipment and "get proficient" (as well borrow as my cousin's old "Buzz Box" stick welder that he's offered me & get better at that also).The target audience is for general welding, but does cover a lot of areas for which many readers would have an interested. If you're one of those looking to learn/refine your welding technique to just work on cars, there is a better book for you (see my other reviews), but it would still not hurt you to have this book for the well written text and the exceptional color photographs, as well as the numerous "skill development" exercises/projects that are included for each chapter.

Maybe one can learn to weld from a book and maybe one can't. Personally I believe nothing beats hands on experience with practical skills like welding when that experience is accompanied by critical feedback from an instructor.However, such experience and training is not always readily available - it took me 8 months of being on the wait list to get a place on the local VoTech school's evening course - and when that is the case a good book can at least provide a starting point.For me this book did that. It's basically aimed at beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of welding. Nevertheless it has enough hard facts and information to act as a limited reference and supplement to hands-on training.Strongly recommended.

I have recently started welding again after about a 20 year layoff. I started by buying a bunch of welding books and reviewing the more modern techniques and equipment. This book is one of the ones that I have found to be well worth the trouble. The book is well written, complete and concise. The images are extremely well-done and seemingly on-point. The book covers all of the conventional welding disciplines...SMAW (stick welding..), GMAW (MIG welding..), GTAW (TIG welding..), and FCAW ((flux-core..) as it relates to MIG..). Note that for an journeyman, or competent welder, some of this information may seem to be a little basic. But, that is the way it is intended. It is a journey through the welding disciplines describing the techniques, the similarities and differences, and the best practices for each. In particular, I found the sections on TIG and MIG to be particularly helpful. The section on basic arc stick welding was a good review, but since little has changed in the preceeding 20 or 30 years it was just a little redundant to me. If you are completely new to welding, or new to the current technology as embodied by modern equipment, this book will really start you off on the right path.This book along with one other, Farm and Workshop Welding: Everything You Need to Know to Weld, Cut, and Shape Metal would make up a great core for learning the necessary subject matter for welding with today's technology. Both of these books are extremely well written and edited. The images are very good and meaningful with respect to the information as it is being presented. This book has a useful index (although it is somewhat limited..), and a small topical section on "Resources" which I found useful as well.If you are interested in learning about welding, you can't go far wrong with this book. I recommend it for everyone other than an experienced journeyman. I am glad that I purchased this one and Farm and Workshop Welding: Everything You Need to Know to Weld, Cut, and Shape Metal as well.It's not perfect, but almost!! Four stars for an almost indispensable reference.

Fun reading for someone that knows nothing about welding. It kept me form getting in trouble with gas torch.

I knew that there had been many advancements in welding technology and I wanted to get an understanding of the currently available welding technologies, including Stick, Tig, Mig, and plasma arc cutting. I saw so many choices on the market and I had no idea what to buy to set up a very simple basic welding capability for occasional light weight welds. The book does a great job of explaining each of the available welding technologies, explaining how to weld different kinds of metals, safety, tips on each kind of welding, and even what basic tools you need to buy to set up a basic welding capability.I have read several "for DUMMIES" books. They are all a great and very informative read and this book lives up to the tradition.

This was a great book to get me started. The author is very safety conscious and I really felt prepared for further education on the subject. Nothing beats in-person instruction, but this really was an informative book and broadened my knowledge.

Bought it for my boyfriend who is taking a welding class for the first time ever. He absolutely loves it!!! He reads the book a little each night and has class on Saturday. He said that the material in the book is easy to comprehend and explained very well. Highly suggest!

Not that I want my friends to see me reading a Dummies book, but the info is very good, well indexed, and clear.

Great book for the beginning welder. Easy to follow and covers all the basics.

Well written very comprehensive. But could use illistrations showing proper way to hold torch ie angle to joint and direction of bead.

Loving the book. I'm learning and the book my teacher wants me to read is a super dense textbook so it's great to have something else that is a survey of the entire subject but more of a layman's guide to.
